- 1872 – George Westinghouse (pictured) receives a patent for the Westinghouse air brake.
- 1948 – H. P. M. Beames, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Western Railway 1920-1922, dies (b. 1875).
- 1956 – The last steam locomotive purchased new by Southern Pacific Railroad, cab forward class AC-12 4-8-8-2 number 4294, is retired from revenue service.[1]
- 2011 – E5 Series Shinkansen trainsets are first introduced on the new Hayabusa services between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori, Japan, initially operating at a maximum speed of 300 km/h (190 mph).
