Hallo all!

My name is Gareth Hughes.

I am an Anglican priest, living in Oxford, England. I am Chaplain of Hertford College, Oxford, and study Syriac at the Oriental Institute in the University of Oxford.

I am most interested in working on articles about language and linguistics, and religion and spirituality.

I have been a Wikipedian since 23 November 2004, and an administrator since 21 October 2005 (RfA). My greatest achievement here so far has been writing the Aramaic language article to featured status.

Thoughts, meditations and quotations
And how does the light creep into the eye?
No one has grasped it:
just as our Saviour who dwelt in the womb.
— St Ephrem the Syrian.
This is true perfection: not to avoid a wicked life because we fear punishment, like slaves; not to do good because we expect repayment, as if cashing in on the virtuous life by enforcing some business deal. On the contrary, disregarding all those good things which we do hope for and which God has promised us, we regard falling from God’s friendship as the only thing dreadful, and we consider becoming God’s friend the only thing truly worthwhile.
— St Gregory of Nyssa.
Only that which is turned to love in our lives can see salvation.
— unknown.

Ain't Syriac pretty!
Ain't Syriac pretty!
I hereby award you with the Exceptional Newcomer Award for your contributions, always of exceptional quality, to all sorts of articles (and notably the linguistic ones in the corner of Wikipedia where I'm most at home). You arrived barely a month ago, and reading through your contributions, I think that almost every single one of them is very valuable and well thought-out. Your list of Past projects speaks for itself. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Keep up the good work! mark 01:12, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Just to continue the theme of wikilove from above, for all your efforts on the hieroglyph templates, you are hereby my hero of the day and here is a gold star (I hope you won't take offence at being awarded an ex-Soviet honour). – ALoan (Talk) 22:24, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Let me add my congrats on your successful RFA. I trust that you will carryout your extra responsibilities diligently. Good luck! Oran e (t) (c) (@) 20:13, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
