Crestone is clearly the anglicized spelling of the augmentative form of Spanish, CRESTA, crest, i.e. cresto'n, "BIG CREST" which certainly describes the high country above Crestone town (KitCarson, Crestone Pk, Crestone Needle).
- Perhaps, but I find it's derivation from Crestonia more persuasive, consider Ophir. Fred Bauder 01:24, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
- According to the Wiki article on Crestonia, Crestone was the name of it's capital. I really can't find any other information. --Calibas (talk) 00:03, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
NAMING
It's doubtful the proposed Macdeonian origin for the town's name is accurate. Borneman and Lampert's book on the Fourteeners states:
The word “Crestone” itself is of Spanish derivation, meaning “the top of a cock’s comb”, “the crest of a helmet”, or in miner’s lexicon, “an outcropping of ore”.
This origin gains credibility when one checks out this Spanish translation of crestón. http://www.spanishdict.com/translate/creston.
Far more likely that the peaks were named first, and the town took its name from the peaks. I'll be deleting the Macdeonian theory unless anyone can convince me otherwise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.165.214.202 (talk) 02:57, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
- If the town were named after the peaks, or the creek, it would have been named Teton. The material in Borneman and Lampert is simply copied from Hart, Fourteen Thousand Feet which relies on local informants of doubtful reliability. Fred Talk 14:04, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
A picture of bear poo!?!
[edit]While this is an article about a town in Colorado, does anyone think it's necessary to include a random picture of a bear poop? While I understand that it's located in some local park in Crestone, I don't think the picture of the bear poop belongs in the article. Plus, it is disgusting enough that I lost my appetite. NHRHS2010 | Talk to me 03:05, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- This summer the bears were all over us, after the trash, climbing, and breaking down, apple trees. That poo is what you may find in the park, to say nothing of the bears. User:Fred Bauder Talk 03:42, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Square Mountain in Picture
[edit]The "square top" mountain next to Crestone Peak is Challenger Point, not Kit Carson. 8.64.33.28 (talk) 15:42, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
