from VfD:

This page served a purpose as a link from the Gallagher page (about the comedian), but I've replaced that link with a link to the proper section on the list of people by name, so this is now redundant (nothing links here but talk pages now). Fewer pages to update as more "Gallaghers" achieve fame. I also think this is the most sensibile way of handling instances like this. -R. fiend 20:18, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

  • Keep. Laudable goal, but life's not that simple--there are three communities named Gallagher, and one already has a Wikipedia article, so a proper disamb page seems more appropriate. Niteowlneils 23:22, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)
    • Ah. Yes, now that a non-person has been added it doesn't work so well. Though I guess I'd now suggest a link from the disambig page to the list of people page (as is done with Watson), which still keeps the goal of not having these people-lists repeated, and made more difficult to update. -R. fiend
      • That's probably reasonable--probably anyone just typing "Gallagher" is most likely looking for the comic, or their town--disamb pages don't even always have people who happen to have the given word as a last name, since it isn't that likely people will type just someone's last name. • I do so from time to time, when I just can't remember the person's first name, or its spelling. It's a useful thing to be able to do for me. (abstain). Rho 06:02, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. Way of disambiguation changed. Leo Gallagher is jut one of Gallaghers. For a non-American he is hardly most prominent. Mikkalai 22:21, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)
  • Changing my vote to keep, now that it's been fixed. -R. fiend 17:39, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

What's wrong with a disambiguation page?

[edit]

I don't get it. There's lots of people called Gallagher and some places too, but both the Gallagher page and Gallagher (disambiguation) redirect to Leo Gallagher. It took me some time to compile the list, why has it gone? And why was it put on VfD (see above)?

Right now, any page that bears the name Gallagher is likely to be a double redirect. <KF> 18:58, May 3, 2005 (UTC)

I have retrieved the old list of people named Gallagher from the edit history and merged it with this disambiguation page. Gallagher (disambiguation) now also redirects to here, and I do hope it can stay this way. <KF> 10:13, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)
It seems there is no hope here, because the list of people named Gallagher has been removed again only a few hours after my editing the page. What's so terrible about that list that it has been removed twice? A few months ago someone even had the whole page deleted and redirected to Leo Gallagher, as if he were the only Gallagher in the world.
I think it's wrong to believe that it will be updated more frequently if it can be found among all the other names at List of people by name. If we have a look at any other disambiguation page of that sort—Blair, Browning, Coolidge, Johnson, Manning, Monroe, Roberts, Robinson, Swift (disambiguation), Thornton, etc.etc.—we might notice that the Gallagher list is nothing out of the ordinary. Other lists of this kind, for example Myers, will still have to be created. (There isn't much there at List of people by name: Mv-Mz, is there?) <KF> 14:12, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

Goligher

[edit]

As a frequent user and sometime editor, I wanted to bring up a problem. I was typing in "goligher" to find Kathleen Goligher's page (she's a debunked medium) and I kept getting this page. I had to type in the full name to find it. Would it be right delink "goligher" from this page and is it possible? Thanks Bpeschel (talk) 21:20, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the redirect so it goes to Kathleen Goligher now. I don't see the need to add a link to her on this page (Gallagher) at this point. --Ken Gallager (talk) 14:26, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
